John Bear A Good Description
"Dear Abby:  I'm slightly confused.  If someone has extremely good qualities and states what they are, is that bragging-even if there was no intention of making others feel bad?"
--Inquisitive In Sunnyvale, Calif.

Answer:
"Dear Inquisitive: It's a matter of degree.  Tooting your own horn isn't necessarily bragging; it can be a form of SELF PROMOTION.  However, if you go on and on about your own 'extremely good qualities' and fail to mention the good qualities of others, frankly, you will eventually find yourself talking to yourself."
--Abigail Van Buren--2007

John Bear was once heard and believed by many, but, now he is down to the gang and perhaps a few dozen more suck-ups.  What a comedown from the wide following he once had when he was the voice of moderation, reason, inclusion, and new educational experiences.  One can only wonder if the voice was for real or was it just the wind blowing between the used cars.

Those who have a need to "puff out their chest" and brag about how great they are, lack self-esteem and are insecurity about themselves. Just ask George Dana Gollin. When your wife is more sucessful than you are and you are kicked to the back burner of importance, I guess his remedy is to hang on the coat tails of those who are famous and well known in a sad attempt to elevate his own status. Where's our psychology majors, isn't there a name or phrase for this type of behavior?

Gollin Fails as Teacher:

Fall 2005 Excellent Teachers: Physics
One can only wonder how George, the self-proclaimed genius, missed out on being selected as an excellent teacher. I mean it is a closed shop. Only a fixed number of people in one department qualify, I mean it's not open to every physics professor in the U.S., and, he didn't MAKE IT. Hmmmmmm!!

It seems the DL expert?? isn't so expert as a physics professor, according to this University of Illinois List.  Perhaps he is no better a teacher than as a DL researcher.

*Lance Cooper is rated outstanding.  But maybe he is doing his job and not spending his workday on other matters, or, maybe he is just better at what the State of Illinois is paying him  to do.

Some time ago I showed some of 'the gangs' posts to an educational psychologist friend. She said she was amazed that such posts were allowed on an Internet forum and that all these individuals appeared to be suffering from a severe dose of psychosis:

Psychosis can take many forms, it can include:

Sensing things that aren't really there (called Hallucinations)
Having beliefs that aren't based on reality (called Delusions)
Problems in thinking clearly (e.g. thought insertion, withdrawal, block, broadcasting)
Not realising that there is anything wrong with themselves (called lack of insight)

Seems to sum up the situation nicely.

I see the link no longer leads to the list of teachers selected from the physics staff who were considered by the students to be excellent teachers. Needless to say George Gollin wasn't on the list.  Sorry for the screwed up link.  It was working when I posted it.   Sad

They seem to me to be people who have not done as much in life as they think they should have and they intend to take it out on anyone who dares to question anything they say or do. It's a severe case of the guy who fails at his dream and makes the world pay for his unhappiness. They have to earn success and respect, not demand it. Life just doesn't work that way.
