Ward Churchill Fired

Just like George Gollin, who uses his position at a major university for his own personal agenda, Ward Churchill was fired.

BOULDER, Colo. -- The University of Colorado Board of Regents on Tuesday fired Ward Churchill, the professor whose remarks likening some Sept. 11 victims to Nazi Adolf Eichmann provoked national outrage and led to an investigation of research misconduct.

Churchill vowed to sue after the 8-1 vote was announced, saying: "New game, new game."

CU President Hank Brown said "the decision was really pretty basic" based on the school's findings of plagiarism, falsification and other infractions involving work unrelated to Churchill's remarks on the Sept. 11 victims. Brown said the school had little choice but to fire Churchill to protect the integrity of the university's research.

"The individual did not express regret, did not apologize, did not indicate a willingness to refrain from this type of falsification in the future," Brown said.

"Do you, at an institution that has a fundamental role in basic research for our society, accept the continued presence of someone who shows a pattern of wanting to continue to falsify research?" Brown said.

"I am going nowhere," Churchill told reporters, calling the academic investigation "a farce" and "a fraud."

Churchill's attorney, David Lane, said the decision was retribution for Churchill's 9/11 remarks and said he would file suit on Wednesday.

"For the public at large, the message is there will be a payback for free speech," Lane said. "It sends a message out to the academic community generally that if you stick your neck out and make politically inflammatory comments, you will be dragged through the mud for two years and you will ultimately have your tenure terminated."

The university's allegations against Churchill included misrepresenting the effects of federal laws on American Indians, fabricating evidence that the Army deliberately spread smallpox to Mandan Indians in 1837, and claiming the work of a Canadian environmental group as his own.

But the essay that thrust Churchill into the national spotlight, titled "Some People Push Back: On the Justice of Roosting Chickens," was not part of the investigation.

That essay and a follow-up book argued that the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks were a response to a long history of U.S. abuses. Churchill said those killed in the World Trade Center collapse were "a technocratic corps at the very heart of America's global financial empire" and called them "little Eichmanns."

Churchill wrote the piece shortly after the attacks, but it drew little notice until 2005, when a professor at Hamilton College in upstate New York called attention to it when Churchill was invited to speak there.

In the uproar that followed, the Regents apologized to "all Americans" for the essay and the Colorado Legislature labeled Churchill's remarks "evil and inflammatory."

Bill Owens, then governor of Colorado, said Churchill should be fired, and George Pataki, then governor of New York, called Churchill a "bigoted terrorist supporter."

School officials concluded Churchill couldn't be dismissed because he was exercising his First Amendment rights. But they launched the investigation into his research in other work.

Tuesday's lone "no" vote came from Cindy Carlisle, who Regents Chairwoman Pat Hayes said agreed with the findings but disagreed with the penalty. Carlisle was not immediately available for comment.

While acknowledging Churchill's First Amendment rights, Democratic Rep. Mark Udall declared that Churchill's actions "have gone far beyond giving voice to reprehensible points of views.

"As much as Ward Churchill would like us to believe otherwise, today's dismissal is about his academic conduct. He has been found to have falsified facts and sources and to have outright plagiarized others' work," Udall said in a statement.

A faculty committee and an interim chancellor had recommended Churchill be fired. When a second committee reviewed the case, three of its five members recommended a suspension. The other two said he should be fired.

Churchill remained on the university payroll but has been out of the classroom since the spring of 2006, first because he was on leave and later because the school relieved him of teaching duties after the interim chancellor recommended he be fired.

I guess the little Eichmanns got him.

Does anyone really believe he was fired for reasons of academic integrity?

Aren't professors supposed to have screwball opinions? Besides, much of what Churchill says rings of the truth.

well, properly quoting and digesting research by others should be matter of pride, not of contempt or falsification. I take pride in the fact my dissertations usually have to be cut in half because there are too many sources or footnotes with sources & remarks.

No less than Nazi minister Rosenberg was at once an outcast because Hitler & other Nazis of more "traditional" German racist persuasion did not like his inclusion of slavic intellectuals among his "brain trust". Well, set aside the old idea countries have their "national gospel", as far fetched & sharp-edged as the countries they claim to fight on moral higher grounds, i think it is much scarier that the establishment go in bed with such frauds ( giving credit to their thesis about research misconduct ) as long as they are mousey and contribute to "the cause".
Validation of my thesis might come from the fact Churchill's "paper", albeit published in the aftermath of the attack, failed to attract overzealous scrutiny for years.
It seems big brother practices the gang methods...
Akin to John Bear, Gregg des Elms, George Brown, Alan Contreras etc, who very likely might have know (some or all of them ) about Thomas Chip White (owner of degreeinfo.com ), big brother loves keeping files about everybody, and having friends whose closets are as full as its own, so it can eventually cheat & expose them.

Alan Contreras and George Gollin will be next to get canned.

Ward Churchill's Twelve Excuses for Plagiarism

Thomas Brown

Plagiary 2007 2(7): 1-13 (30 August 2007)

Abstract

This article observes that Ward Churchill and his defenders have offered twelve different excuses for the plagiarism charges against Churchill. The excuses are contrasted with the established ethical standards governing American scholars. Each excuse is also compared against the available evidence in Churchill's case specifically. It is found that several of Churchill's excuses highlight ambiguities in the established ethical standards, indicating the need for further debate in the scholarly community in order to more precisely delineate the boundary between ethical scholarship and unethical scholarship. It is also found that the evidence of Churchill's plagiarism overwhelms any ambiguities, and that each of his twelve excuses fails to justify his plagiarism.

He was fired for saying the victims of the 9/11 deserved what they got!

I find it hard to believe that Ward Churchill got a tenured faculty position in the first place. He doesn't have a doctorate; his B.A. and M.A. from Sangamon State University (now U of Illinois at Springfield) give hope to the Rich "Bomber" Douglas types who want to slide into a tenured faculty position with their 3rd and 4th tier college degrees.

"Churchill has written or coauthored fourteen books and more than 150 published essays."

If the Bomber had devoted his energies to publishing (or, a la Levicoff, self-publishing) his ramblings instead of posting them on gay boy porn sites he'd be there already. That shows you how a doctorate--any crappy doctorate--can be leveraged in academia. Invariably when you wonder how some idiot with lame credentials ever got a teaching position the answer is that they have a string of published work.

He has been proven to be the typical ultra liberal. He does not wish to be bound by all those nasty old things like truth, reality, integrity. To him the end justifies the means. In other words you may lie, hide, fake it, say anything you wish, and never worry about it being real, provided, it gets you where you are going.

His stories about Vietnam are absurd. Every telling is different than the last and none are backed up by his military records.

He has claimed to be Indian, but, he isn't. His parents were white, and attempts to prove he has Indian blood have always failed. He was made an honorary Indian by one tribe, that is the extent of his Indian heritage.

He was found guilty of academic fraud, misconduct, plagiarism, fabrication, and falsification.

The man is not real, he is all smoke and mirrors. No cause needs this type of non-person as its supporter. Why do I call him a non-person? Because almost all he claims to have done or been is untrue. He made it up as he went along and bleeding heart liberals accepted it without checking, why?? because he was saying what many of them wished to believe and to hear. And that is the great danger in these conmen. They will lead you over the cliff with their wild stories and tales.

Abagnale, Bear, Ward, Puff the Magic Dragon, all the same, they sound too good to be true, and they are.

The truth is often gained by great pain and hard work. It doesn't come from the mouths of would be leaders and so-called heroes. The heroes, we probably don't even know their names, but these phonies, they make damn sure we hear their names over and over. Sad

On Churchill's writings:
Nearly all of his works are a synthesis and reinterpretation, drawing upon studies by other scholars. They do the work and he RE-WORKS their facts and ideas to fit his ideas and requirements. Most of his work is published in non-mainstream journals that are not peer-reviewed. We don't want them checked too closely do we, or they would be found to be meandering, mistaken, and misstated.

The facts he doesn't twist, he completely misstates. Put it this way. Don't ever quote one of his books or essays without double checking the facts elsewhere.
