I agree that it's good to distrust the motives of government. As in Lord of the Flies, if there is no "beast" extant from which to protect us they will create one.
But the conflict between the Jews and Arabs is real. If the US is going to exercise a leadership role (whether it should or not is another issue), publicly cracking insulting ethnic jokes about some of the interested parties doesn't seem like conduct calculated toward promoting resolutions.
Jones undermines the very leadership role the country is assuming in the first place. And of course he also destroys whatever personal credibility he might have had. Not because he may or may not hold some ethnic bias, but because he's too stupid to consider the effect of his words. Again, that's a competency issue.
