Columbia Professor Charged With Punching University Employee

A [regionally accredited] Columbia University professor has been charged with assault and harassment after an another Columbia employee accused him of punching her in the eye at an Upper West Side bar Friday night.

The professor, Lionel McIntyre, 59, was arrested on Monday, three days after the confrontation. According to a police report, Professor McIntyre and Camille Davis, a theater production manager in the university’s School of the Arts, were having a discussion that “escalated in a verbal dispute” and Mr. McIntyre punched Ms. Davis in the right eye.

The encounter happened in Toast, a popular, noisy bar and restaurant on Broadway near campus, where the chatter often runs to current events and politics. Professor McIntyre liked to engage fellow patrons on the subject of race, according to one regular customer, Daniel Morgan, who considers himself a close acquaintance of both Professor McIntyre and Ms. Davis.

A Columbia spokesman, Robert Hornsby, declined to say whether Professor McIntyre was suspended. “The university is not offering any comment,” he said.

It was unclear why Ms. Davis, who suffered bruising and swelling, according to the police report, did not immediately go to the police. Neither she nor Professor McIntyre responded to phone and e-mail messages; the professor’s lawyer, Richard Abraham, also did not return phone messages. Professor McIntyre was released without bail after a court appearance. The arrest was reported Tuesday in The New York Post and The Columbia Spectator.

An associate professor in the practice of community development, Mr. McIntyre teaches courses about community development and directs the university’s Urban Technical Assistance Project, which was created in 1995 within Columbia’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. Its mission is to provide urban planning expertise and technical help to inner-city communities.

He received a master of science degree in urban planning from Columbia in 1988. Between 1993 and 1999, he headed the university’s Graduate Program in Urban Planning. According to a university biography, Mr. McIntyre worked in civil rights and labor organizing in the South in the 1960s and 1970s.

A prominent Columbia architecture professor punched a female university employee in the face at a Harlem bar during a heated argument about race relations, cops said yesterday.

Police busted Lionel McIntyre, 59, for assault yesterday after his bruised victim, Camille Davis, filed charges.

McIntyre and Davis, who works as a production manager in the school's theater department, are both regulars at Toast, a popular university bar on Broadway and 125th Street, sources said.

The professor, who is black, had been engaged in a fiery discussion about "white privilege" with Davis, who is white, and another male regular, who is also white, Friday night at 10:30 when fists started flying, patrons said.

McIntyre, who is known as "Mac" at the bar, shoved Davis, and when the other patron and a bar employee tried to break it up, the prof slugged Davis in the face, witnesses said.

"The punch was so loud, the kitchen workers in the back heard it over all the noise," bar back Richie Velez, 28, told The Post. "I was on my way over when he punched Camille and she fell on top of me."

The other patron involved in the dispute said McIntyre then took a swing at him after he yelled, "You don't hit a woman!"

"He knocked the glasses right off my face," said the man, who would only give his first name as "Shannon." "The punch came out of nowhere. Mac was talking to us about white privilege and what I was doing about it -- apparently I wasn't doing enough."

McIntyre had squabbled with Davis several weeks earlier over issues involving race, witnesses said. As soon as the professor threw the punch Friday, server Rob Dalton and another employee tossed him out.

"It was a real sucker punch," Dalton said. "Camille's a great lady, always nice to everybody, and doesn't deserve anything like this."

Davis was spotted wearing sunglasses yesterday to conceal the black eye. Reached at her Columbia office, she declined to comment on the alleged attack.

McIntyre was released without bail at his arraignment last night.

"It was a very unfortunate event," he said afterwards. "I didn't mean for it to explode the way it did."

I'm actually waiting to see if Columbia University takes any action. A male faculty member assaults a female employee in an off-campus bar would probably warrant some type of action at most schools.

Let's give Gollin a little credit. At least we don't read about George being involved in these types of after hours, alcohol-induced incidents.

While slavery used to be a real problem, I was shocked to discover that in the 1820s etc, when the repatriation movement was at its highest, Africans testified during Senate hearings that they WANTED to remain in America instead of going BACK TO AFRICA as the popular program then went.
Repatriation societies were headed both by whites (you even got an official government program under Monroe and that's how Liberia was born and why its capital is called Monrovia ) and Africans...yet the majority of Africans -then slaves, remember- did NOT join or approve of the repatriation movement...mother Africa my a$$.
Greedy yankees sabotaged the government program claiming it was too expensive and none of their business, while at that point in time in the South they were more interested in getting rid of slaves because no economic boom had picked up yet.

Remember that TV show that Richard Pryor had (briefly) years ago?  There was this very funny bit he did about an evangelist doing a telethon, only he wasn't getting any traction with the viewing audience.  

He would preach for awhile and then say, "Remember, every dollar you send in goes to the civil rights movement!"  The phones were completely quiet.  

Then he would preach a little more and then say, "Remember, every dollar you send in goes to help underprivileged children in the inner city."  Nothing doing, all phones silent.  

So he preaches a little more and then says, "Remember, every dollar you send in goes to the B.T.A.M.  That stands for the Back To Africa Movement!"  RING, RING, RING, RING, RING, RING!

Actually some great marketing lessons there.  Know your audience, check your demographics before you buy the time, and
adapt quickly to changing or unanticipated circumstances.  And as every politician knows, sell what people are buying, even if it's not what you really believe in.
