But understand that George Maxwell Brown was operating under the most primitive of academic conditions known to modern man. He had to do all the work by himself, instead of letting 15 friends do it for him like they do at Princeton. It's a "tradition" there, you know, not really a violation of academic policy.
Plus even the shabbiest American schools let you have a buddy on your dissertation committee. If George could have cut his total project time down to eight or nine months he might have had plenty of time left over to include some actual substance or original research.
Besides, who knows what sort of surly foreigners really operate those websites? They might come knocking at his door some evening to complain. Since they have no Second Amendment in Australia, instead of a traditional American greeting of lead mixed with sulfur, charcoal and saltpeter, George would have to serve them tea and biscuits and hope they didn't decide to remove his toupee and polish his bald dome with their knuckles.
After all, academic research isn't really about self-sacrifice or a search for truth and knowledge; it's a search for self-aggrandizement, resume-enhancement and a better paying job. Why do any more than the absolute minimum?
