That reminds me. I saw a guy who came to the Mississippi coast, he was on ETV / A short program, and really wanted to help. But he had been a student for years and apparently had no real life skills. They tried the poor boob on several different jobs but he couldn't use tools, was too out of shape for any really hard work, they tried him on digging a water line, so they let him hand out water bottles. The sad part is the guy really wanted to do some work but had no idea how to do any.
Some free advice for parents of sweet precious little darlings wanting to save the world. Either teach them some skills, get them a part time job so they can learn some, or, explain to them that we don't need more crying-sobbing children to look and stare at the devastated coastline / homes.
Most of the real (help-work) is coming from older people, plumbers, carpenters, welders, brick masons, people with real skills, who are helping out free of charge in their spare time. A lot of churches are bringing in people who are mostly older, some retired, who know how to do things. Don't get me wrong. Some of the kids who come from working class people know how to do things. Skills they learned from their part-time jobs and from skills taught to them by their parents, from life. And a few of the darlings can actually learn to W-O-R-K, if they have to. But many prefer to just look at the dirt, and stay away from it, ESPECIALLY the dirty old work, sitting in the motel rooms calling all their friends telling them how bad it is down here. We don't need more crying kittens. We need people who know how to do things and are willing to.
