I would say that their story has similarities to the Hitler's ROA or Russian Liberation Army. Like this group they were recruited among POWs. But thats an entirely different story.
A similar phenomenon during the American Civil War: Black Confederates in the Civil War. Not POWs but brave men fighting for their country.
It seems that the participants don't always consult with the revisionist historians before joining the fray. This makes it awkward to "explain" the conflict in ideological terms when the facts demonstrate otherwise.
