In the introduction to one of Bear/Klempner's "guide to distance learning", it states,(among other things), that Bear/Klempner "worked" as a prison psychologist.

Work release?

Ha ha, old joke, been done several times, one of which appeared here:

I just responded briefly to decimon's "Work release?" comment, which was funnier than he/she realized -- since I did do my required psychology internship for Cal with a prison psychologist with his office in San Quentin (Leon Tabory). But contrary to the reports on other forums, I did go home every afternoon. Indeed that closeup look at prison life for one semester would be enough to dissuade anyone from a life of crime.

Good liars usually weave a little truth into the story, so they have a plausible explanation in case they get caught. In this case the "work" was an internship, apparently not a paying job. Honest people usually distinguish to avoid the appearance of overstating their qualifications. That Klempner did not gives you abundant insight into his character.
