Nice Argument About Christology
#7
never forget there are so-called apocryphal gospels disposed of by church leaders as they were non-syn-optic (=readable side to side making sense ) like the 4 gospels they retained. There were at some point upto thirty different, equally accredited gospels (EG Mary's, Thomas', Judas', Magdalen's...) and some of these are still recognized by lesser denominations such as coptic christianity.
There were gospels telling of Jesus' many brothers; gospels arguing Jesus was not free from original sin because of himself, but because of Mary; gospels arguing Jesus asked Judas to betray him to fulfill his mission; gospels in which Jesus behaves rather like a conjurer or David Copperfield.
Big book of myths.
Always remember such gospels we ignore or even despise today were fully accredited for centuries.
Of course church leaders needed to shape the cult in the most coherent way allowed, much as another row of editing took place after the protestant reform, and many millenary traditions, EG cult of saints &angels, group of the most close saints etc, were espurgated to "make sense".
Eminently political moves.
