That is, just how arbitrary these prosecutions are, just how unethical the government is in pursuing its victims (e.g., stealing files and then lying about it), just what a rigged game the entire process is from investigation to prosecution to adjudication, and how a wealthy cartel can manipulate the system to put its competitors not only out of business but behind bars.

I won't raise a finger to defend millists who did whatever they did not for the greater good of anybody, but to line their own pockets.
However, it is true that big brother is the quintessential amoral entity when it comes to anything.

Helen Duncan was a self-proclaimed 'medium' who conducted seances during WWII. For some twist of fate, she 'predicted' the sinking of a UK ship that big brother was denying at the time. Now, you say, there were probably thousands of people 'seeing' things in the bottom of their beer bottle, but she was famous enough and big brother wanted to make an example of her, so she was sentenced on the grounds of centuries old sorcery laws -yes, sorcery laws-.
Helen Duncan's seances were regularly infiltrated -much as most popular mediums' were- and that led to a shock that possibly led to her later death when undercover squealers interrupted her trance...trying to catch a spirit that was allegedly materializing out of her mouth!

In other words, it is not prudent to cross big brother's path...there is a Finkelstein, Hayward, Churchill, Irving show ready to start in your honor at any moment...with you as the defendant.

Come on...big brother pulls the wires of both as it sees fit.
No judge, no journalist, no academic will risk to ruin his career on a lost cause...whose only net result would be to add his name to a long list of neonazis, antinationals, spies or whatever big brother dabbles in today to enthuse the flag-waving unwashed while plotting the next stock market crash that will leave them homeless, or the next tax raise.
