The part I don't get is that the operation was amateurish from day one and the prosecutors and the courts paint it like it was some great sophisticated organized crime ring. All the sophisticated operations in the world are still operating. They did not take even simple steps to ensure their safety. I guess they believed that since they weren't defrauding anyone, just providing goods as ordered, they weren't committing a federal crime. The fact that they were right didn't stop a determined prosecutor from ignoring the law and going for the conviction.
