Now from which book, chapter, and verse of the Bible did the pope get his authority?  I guess I missed that one too. 

Obviously you didn't go to a Catholic school, Ben, or you would know the answer to that one.  It's the Petrine Guarantee, found at Matthew 16:18:

"And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."

Or was it from David Peel?  I can't remember now.
