He quit the Kinks (probably shortly after this video was made) because he made more money working in the garage than he made with the Kinks. Ray Davies is notorious for being a cheapskate.
Ironically, Pyle succeeded John Dalton, who also quit the Kinks because he wasn't making any money. Dalton's wife asked him if the band would be touring before Christmas, because they wouldn't have any gift money otherwise. Dalton asked Ray who confirmed they would not be touring, so Dalton quit and got a job so he could afford to buy presents for his own kids. Father Christmas give us your money indeed.
