Like most inept bureaucrats, Sheriff Dumpnik seeks to deflect the blame for his own incompetence. It seems the local gendarmes were well familiar with Loughner and his multiple death threats, stalking and unstable behavior, yet did nothing.

Not unlike the major midwestern university that has a professor on staff notorious for death threats, stalking and unstable behavior. Will they also be blaming talk radio when he goes postal?

Dumpnik ignored Loughner's obvious lunacy because Loughner's mom worked for the county. Better to endanger everyone in town than to enforce the law against one of our own. Police union goon and malingerer Bruce Tait wouldn't have done it any differently in Quincy.

Quote:The thoroughly disgraceful Sheriff Dupnik
January 11th, 2011

And now we know why he preferred to politicize the atrocity rather than do his job:

Quote:The sheriff has been editorializing and politicizing the event since he took the podium to report on the incident. His blaming of radio personalities and bloggers is a pre-emptive strike because Mr. Dupnik knows this tragedy lays at his feet and his office. Six people died on his watch and he could have prevented it. He needs to step up and start apologizing to the families of the victims instead of spinning this event to serve his own political agenda.

Jared Loughner has been making death threats by phone to many people in Pima County including staff of Pima Community College, radio personalities and local bloggers. When Pima County Sheriff’s Office was informed, his deputies assured the victims that he was being well managed by the mental health system. It was also suggested that further pressing of charges would be unnecessary and probably cause more problems than it solved as Jared Loughner has a family member that works for Pima County. Amy Loughner is a Natural Resource specialist for the Pima County Parks and Recreation. My sympathies and my heart goes out to her and the rest of Mr. Loughner’s family. This tragedy must be tearing them up inside wondering if they had done the right things in trying to manage Jared’s obvious mental instability.

Every victim of his threats previously must also be wondering if this tragedy could have been prevented if they had been more aggressive in pursuing charges against Mr. Loughner. Perhaps with a felony conviction he would never have been able to lawfully by the Glock 9mm Model 19 that he used to strike down the lives of six people and decimate 14 more.

This was not an act of politics. This was an act of a mentally disturbed young man hell bent on getting his 15 minutes of infamy. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department was aware of his violent nature and they failed to act appropriately. This tragedy leads right back to Sherriff Dupnik and all the spin in the world is not going to change that fact.

I wouldn’t have believed Dupnik’s wholly unsubstantiated attack against his fellow citizens for the act of a madman could have gotten any more disgusting. But it just did.

If anyone else besides Loughner could truly be said to have blood on his hands, it just might be Dupnik. This man is a complete disgrace, a blot on his office, and unworthy of the public trust. He should be removed immediately, by whatever means the state of Arizona has in place to deal with such eventualities.

Rambling, incoherent writings and comments?

Quote:Red Flags at a College, but Tied Hands

...Although there is no reliable profile for a political assassin, such people almost always plan their attack, carefully choosing a target, a weapon and a time.

“We tend to want to dismiss these people as unstable types that snapped,” Dr. Borum said, “but there’s a whole process that occurs between conceiving the idea and executing it.”

Details about Mr. Loughner are still emerging, and only an examining doctor will be able to make a definitive diagnosis. But the writings and comments attributed to him point strongly to the kind of delusional thinking that is common in schizophrenia.

“I’d say the chances are 99 percent that he has schizophrenia,” said Dr. E. Fuller Torrey, the founder of the Treatment Advocacy Center in Arlington, Va., which advocates stronger laws to require treatment for people with severe mental illnesses. “He was together enough to take courses, and people with untreated schizophrenia can function very well for periods. But when you see these rambling, incoherent writings and comments, there is almost no other disorder where this is a prominent symptom.”

Many of Mr. Loughner’s reported comments — about currency and government — also suggest a growing paranoia. As a rule, violence is less common among people with mental illness than is often assumed; a vast majority are no more likely to commit harm than anyone else.

But studies suggest that a small subset of those with untreated, paranoid psychosis are two to three times as likely as people without mental disorders to get into physical altercations, researchers say.

“Certainly not all paranoids are mass murderers” by a long shot, said Dr. Michael Stone, a forensic psychiatrist in New York, “but almost all mass murderers are paranoid.”

But even if a doctor had diagnosed paranoia in this case, the knowledge might not have been helpful. A 1999 study of assassins and attackers found few common threads. Many had delusional ideas, but few heard voices; still fewer abused drugs or belonged to militant groups.

It is also not clear, some doctors said, that today’s partisan climate had any bearing on the assault. “The psychosis picks up on the grand themes of the day, whether those are antigovernment or something else,” Dr. Stone said.

In the logic of delusion, a grievance may be conflated with some larger mission, whether religious, political or artistic. “It’s not political thinking,” Dr. Torrey said. “It’s psychotic thinking.”

Dr. Borum and many others have argued that colleges, among other large institutions, can be more assertive in their approach to people who show a potential for violence.

If complaints are piling up about someone, you could send a mental health person and a member of the campus police over to simply interview the person,” Dr. Borum said. “This intervention might be enough to put the person on notice, and maybe to move them into treatment.”

If not, they may wind up — as Mr. Loughner apparently did — alone with their thoughts. In recent decades, states have cut spending for hospitals and treatment centers, to the point where many people with aggressive urges cannot get therapy even if they want it. This retreat from providing services may have affected the sentencing of mentally ill offenders, some experts argue.

“The insanity defense, which may be tried in this case, is often unsuccessful,” Dr. Torrey said, “and one reason is that juries are afraid to send people to state hospitals, where they belong. They’d rather lock them up for longer, in prison.”

Interestingly enough, Sarah Palin has drawn fire for having targets on various congressional districts on her website.

Now isn't that the exact same thing that George Gollin did on his website?

Not quite the exact same thing. Violence-prone extremist George Gollin used violent imagery to threaten people he thought were responsible for pranking on him on an internet website.

The original picture was hot-linked to one of Gollin and his wife on Gollin's server. The captions were something along the lines of "Goatbags Splitsville?" suggesting disunity in the marital community due to Gollin's embarrassing conduct. IIRC, there was also some mention of a "ferry" and how if they were referring to Contreras they spelled it wrong.

Gollin became enraged by this benign exercise of free speech. He replaced the original photo on his server with the infamous rifle sight death threat, which is why the image bears the "george_and_melanie.gif" title.

An interesting hypothesis. So while the 22-year old misogynist doofus adopts the do-it-yourself approach, the 57-year old misogynist doofus follows his usual practice of getting someone else to do his dirty work for him, such as the gullible, slothful government.

As they say, youth and enthusiasm will never defeat old age and treachery!

Quote:University of Arizona Journalism School Upholding Sheriff Dupnik's Opinion
Katie Pavlich

So much for teaching objectivity....

I just received the University of Arizona School of Journalism (a public university) alumni eNewsletter for January 12, 2011. In it is a story written by UA Professor Mort Rosenblum.

Rosenblum gives credit to Sheriff Dupnik's claims that the horrific actions of Jared Loughner in Tucson were caused by what he calls "vitriolic" rhetoric from television and radio personalities.

So far, there has been no evidence whatsoever to back up Dupnik's claims, yet the UA Journalism School has decided to promote the blatantly false and opinionated article anyway.

The newsletter:

The linked story Tucson's War-Zone Reality:

Quote:Tucson today reflects deep societal sickness.

As Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said, political vitriol drives the unbalanced to extremes. And just about anyone can buy the firepower to murder en masse.

“The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous," Dupnik said. “And ... I think Arizona has become sort of the capital.”

True enough. To a reporter who grew up here, whose first real job was covering Tucson for the morning daily, there is much to trouble the spirit.

Some kind of reporter Rosenblum is in this case, considering he is citing and agreeing with a Sheriff who admitted he has found no evidence in his investigation of Jared Loughner that political rhetoric was linked to or the cause of the shooting on Saturday. In fact, there is evidence to prove the opposite and it is clear Loughner has a mental health problem.

Quote:Sarah Palin's Map
Neal Boortz

In the wake of the Tucson tragedy the left has made quite the big deal of a map that Sarah Palin put on her website. To listen to the media murmur you would think that Palin’s Map was the primary, if not the sole cause of the shooting of Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and the murder of six innocent people. The New York Daily News opined that Giffords' blood was on Sarah Palin’s hands because she put a cross hair over Giffords' Arizona district on her map. Today on virtually every broadcast and cable news show you will see talking heads referring to the cross hairs on Palin’s map.

OK … just what map are we talking about here? Several months ago during the heat of the 2008 midterm elections Sarah Palin put Giffords on her “target list” of Democrats in vulnerable districts who voted for ObamaCare. The list included a map featuring what the media and those on the left are calling telescopic sight images placed over vulnerable districts. Somehow, the liberals have construed that to mean that Sarah Palin literally wanted to “target” Giffords to be shot.

Were the symbols on Palin’s map really the crosshairs through a gun sight, as claimed, prior to the shooting, by Congresswoman Giffords herself? Palin’s office says they were not. They claim they were surveyor’s marks. So who’s right?

We’ll start our quest for the truth with an actual look at the map that was posted on Palin’s website:

OK … An argument could be made that those are cross hairs. But Palin’s office says they were surveyor’s marks. Can that argument be sustained? Here’s a link for you to peruse. The link leads you to a booklet from the U.S. Geological Survey titled “Topographic Map Symbols.” After you’ve clicked on the link start scrolling down the page. About halfway through on the right column you will see “CONTROL DATA AND MONUMENTS.” Now remember .. these are symbols for maps – as in “Sarah Palin’s Map”. The first entry under the title bar is labeled “Principal point,” and there you have it. Just to the right. Just about the exact same symbol that appears on the Palin map. Well, by goodness, it would seem that it is indeed a surveyor’s symbol! A map symbol! Just what you might expect to find on a …. MAP!

Crosshairs are placed on people. Map symbols are placed on maps. It’s a pretty simple concept, really.

But I know that this isn’t going to be good enough for many of you. There is, after all, a political advantage that can be gained by insisting that those are crosshairs on the Palin map. That’s why many in the ObamaMedia will continue to run with that “cross hairs” scenario. It works for them, so stick with it in spite of the facts.

Well, there’s not much we can do about that. Fine; but before we move on why not take a look at just two more maps?

The above map appeared on the website of the Democratic Leadership Committee back in 2004. Please make note of the use of the word “enemy” to refer to Republicans, as well as the phrase “ripe targets for Democrats.” You’ve already notice that on this map there are no surveyor’s marks. What you have are bull’s-eyes. Yup … bull’s-eyes. Clearly the type of bull’s eyes you would use for a target for shooting purposes. Ahhh .. but these are Republicans being “targeted” by Democrats. So, no harm, no foul.

Now .. another map:

This map was posted on the website of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee about a year ago. Do you see any surveyor’s marks or anything that could be mistaken for surveyor’s marks? Nope. But what DO we see? Looks to me like there are some bull’s-eyes there. Targets, pure and simple, plus a map legend that said the bull’s eyes represented “targeted Republicans.” You need to know that this week Democrat Congressman Chris Van Hollen was quick to make an appearance on MSNBC with Chris (of the tingly leg) Matthews to condemn the Palin Map. He said that it was really dangerous to try to make your point in that particular way. Christ Van Hollen was the leader of the DCCC when the above map was placed on their website.

Of course none of this makes any difference whatsoever to those of the leftist persuasion who are determined to seize on this tragedy for political gain. You, though, now see how phony, not to mention hypocritical, this “Palin’s Map” nonsense is.

Sure sounds to me like extremist vitriol, inflammatory language and an implicit instigation of violence. The parallels are disturbing. To avoid the potentially tragic consequences of this and all his other irresponsible behavior, shouldn't law enforcement be notified?

After all, this could be a cry for help. Rather than ignoring these "red flags" as so often happens, we would be doing him a favor by ensuring he received the appropriate mental health counseling and incarceration.
