Consumers Union Slams Accreditation - Dickie Billericay - 10-14-2009 In a letter to California Governor Schwarzeneggar urging him to veto AB 48, Consumers Union Special Projects Director Elizabeth M. Imholz assails the unwarranted deference the bill gives to accredited institutions. Consistent with what many here have argued for years, she confirms that accreditation is not an indicator of even a minimum level of quality, but is rather just a self-serving collective. Quote:This bill exempts from coverage all institutions accredited by any regional accreditor. That means that these schools, which have a large student population, have no consumer protection (e.g. disclosure and refund) requirements—and they pay no licensing fees to the state. http://www.insidehighered.com/content/download/320199/4115320/version/1/file/AB+48+_Portantino+Niello_+Governor.pdf RE: Consumers Union Slams Accreditation - Virtual Bison - 10-15-2009 I do hope Arnold has the good sense to slam this bill. In the past he has protected the interests of non-Traditional education. Lets hope he continues to support this cause. Now they have created another ineffective, top-heavy bureaucracy that is supposed to "help" all the poor, naive and innocent students, all the while ignoring the biggest offenders, the exploitative clique of the wealthy, entrenched RA mob. Do Californians feel safer knowing that some barber college is now going to have to ante up to pay for this farce, while the likes of Hecht and his RA travesty go merrily on their way? He is a better Governor than Gray Davis, but that is not saying all that much. |
