Will WASC Axe Trident? - Martin Eisenstadt - 01-30-2012
On July 11, 2011, WASC issued Trident University International (TUI) an order to Show Cause why their accreditation should not be terminated as of March 30, 2012.
Come the day of reckoning, will WASC terminate Trident's accreditation, allow them to continue their accreditation, or kick the can down the road?

If they didn't have enough problems...
Trident is sending warning notices out to all past and present students that someone tried (unsuccessfully, they say) to hack their database.
Quote:On November 29, 2011, we detected an unsuccessful attempt by an unidentified person to access one of our databases contining username and passwords for approximately 81,000 current and former student accounts. No other information was contained in that database. Trident University permanently removed the database from the network and engaged an external forensic team to assess the nature of the incident.
Our investigation did not find any evidence that someone successfully obtained access to the database. Based on a review of the available log-in history for November and December 2011, we have found no unusual log-in activity to indicate that student accounts were inappropriately accessed.
Nobody loves you when you're down and out.....but they will try to hack your database.

...taken Trident off show cause. The official announcement will be tomorrow (Thursday, 5/8).

Considering how most of Tuoro/TUI/Trident's customers are military (i.e., professionally trained to kill), it might be the stuffed shirts at WASC who just had the near death experience.

Probably not as much as a guy who spent most of his hitch bar-hopping in Itaewon bragging that he served "20 clicks from the DMZ."

Off show cause, on probation. Not exactly a ringing endorsement from WASC:

Probation reflects the Commission’s finding that the institution has made significant strides in addressing the areas of non-compliance, but that action is still needed before the institution can be found to comply fully with the Standards of Accreditation. The Commission reviewed Trident University International under the WASC Handbook of Accreditation and found that the University was not in compliance with elements of two of the four WASC Standards for Accreditation: Standard 1 (Defining Institutional Purposes and Ensuring Educational Objectives) and 2 (Achieving Educational Objectives through Core Functions).
The accredited status of the institution continues during the Probation period.
A Special Visit will be scheduled for fall 2012 to evaluate Trident's progress in addressing the Commission's concerns. ...
This sounds more like "kicking the can down the road" than anything else. "Probation" is only moderately better than "show cause," especially when a "Special Visit" could have them back on "show cause" again in only six months or so.

It's probably the only positive step away from the situation. I doubt WASC would go as far as a show-cause and then just walk away. Trident will have to prove it can operate free of the troubles identified, hence the probation. And yes, reverting to "show cause" remains a risk. So does revocation of accreditation.
