SPRINGFIELD – Democrat Ann Callis says she's raised more than $255,000 in the final quarter of 2013 in her bid to unseat Republican U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis.

The former Madison County judge said she will head into the final months of the campaign with over $500,000 to spend in her bid to represent the 13th Congressional District.

Callis' opponents in the March 18 Democratic primary – George Gollin and David Green of Champaign – did not unveil their fundraising numbers Tuesday. Reports aren't due to the Federal Election Commission until the end of the month.

Gollin earlier reported loaning his campaign more than $165,000. Green is running a low-budget campaign and said he hopes to raise $10,000 before the primary election.

Callis, of Edwardsville, has the backing of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which has targeted Davis, a freshman from Taylorville, for defeat. Other Callis supporters include U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois and a handful of labor unions.

In a statement, Callis' campaign said she received contributions from more than 2,500 individuals, along with labor groups, political action committees, and members of Congress.

“Our ability to raise money and earn endorsements shows the broad-based support that Judge Callis has received throughout the district,” campaign manager Marshall Cohen said in a prepared statement.

Along with Davis, Urbana lawyer Erika Harold and Moro veterinarian Michael Firsching are vying for the GOP nomination in the district that stretches from Champaign-Urbana to Edwardsville and includes all or parts of Decatur and Bloomington-Normal.

Young Democrats

On Sunday the newly formed Champaign County Young Democrats made their first set of primary election endorsements in three county board races and in the three-way 13th Congressional District race.

The Young Democrats endorsed Ann Callis of Edwardsville in the 13th District over Champaign Democrats George Gollin and David Green.

. . . A two-thirds majority was needed to get the endorsement from the eight executive board members voting, Redenbaugh said.

The group's endorsement doesn't yield any campaign funds, he said, but candidates "can publicly say the Young Democrats of Champaign County endorsed them. We'll be working toward helping those candidates in any way that they feel they can use us."

Redenbaugh said he didn't think the Young Democrats had significantly different interests or priorities than other Democrats.
