I couldn't find the post. Is it still there? Or did Gus save Janko's pimply butt? Nice discussion on the pope. Now from which book, chapter, and verse of the Bible did the pope get his authority? I guess I missed that one too. Time for reading glasses. Damned inflexible lenses.

Obviously you didn't go to a Catholic school, Ben, or you would know the answer to that one.  It's the Petrine Guarantee, found at Matthew 16:18:

"And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."

Or was it from David Peel?  I can't remember now.

I knew that. I thought the pope's name was Benedict, not Peter.

In the day it wasn't all that apparent that Peter was the leader of the church.
