Trustee meddling in student affairs at the University of Illinois' flagship campus extended beyond admissions as one board member made sure his relative got the classes he wanted, an associate dean testified Monday before a state panel.
Mary Ramsbottom, associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, told the Illinois Admissions Review Commission that she received a "directive" from the provost's office in 2003 to help the student secure spots in classes that were already filled.
In doing so, the student jumped over scores of others ahead of him in the queues, she said.

Quote: Role of the Executive Officer in Managing Conflict of Interest Issueshttps://slss0809.theregistrationsystem.c.../index/380
For persons in the role of academic department head or department chair, conflict of interest can be a complex, difficult and therefore interesting matter. The issues and filiations can be subtle; the apparently harmless and even the apparently beneficial can be insidious. Executive Officers’ lack of knowledge and the lack of clarity on how to handle such issues can be potentially embarrassing for both the university and the individual academic unit.
The Role of The Executive Officer in Managing Conflict of Interest Issues Seminar has been designed to heighten the awareness and sensitivity of people in academic leadership positions, where many such challenges are likely to occur.
The seminar will be conducted on a case-study approach, led by Steve Veazie, University Counsel, and Melanie Loots, Associate Vice Chancellor for Research and University Conflict of Interest Officer. The session promises to provide for a high level of participation and discussion.
Please note that this is entirely separate from the state-mandated online ethics training.

Isn’t it about time the University of Illinois fired everyone responsible for this debacle?

A newly proposed law would fire the entire University of Illinois Board of Trustees following an admissions scandal at the state's most prestigious campus.
State Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale) proposed the legislation this week, saying the majority of U. of I. trustees failed to protect the university from the nepotism and patronage practices that plague Illinois politics. Eight of the nine current members were either appointed or reappointed by ousted Gov. Rod Blagojevich....
