He had been working on his dissertation for at least nine years, and I regard it as an academic masterpiece: The Republic of the Sacred: A Commentary on Book II of Cicero's On the Laws.

Tell me that Dr. Bear is wrong. Janko may have been a cranky old man with a uniquely personal sense of morality, but the same title - no.
Edit - Bear was wrong - Dr. Song was his adviser at U. of Zululand.? Song knows as much about Cicero as I know about doctor level theology - little.? Apparently the degree was a ThD not a PhD.

I hope their mouths are stuffed with flea infested sand for their crass devaluation of this fine soul. Unk was rarely wrong, in my opinion, certainly less often than I. His passing has left a vacuum on this board which hopefully will be filled by others as true as he.

Why would anyone make the assumption that Janko knew anything about distance ed? Did he ever tell the general public? Sorry Bill but he chose to portray himself as just another guy with an opinion, a caustic opinion at that.
I enjoyed discussions with him before circumstances dictated that it was not possible. He wouldn't leave the confines of Degreediscussion and after sharing my personal opinions about Homeless Gus, I could not post there.
I don't know that disagreeing with someone is crass devaluation. Perhaps agreeing too much might be. Janko was up for a scrap and it's a compliment to him and they posters here that he wasn't disappointed.
I can hear St. Peter's first words to Janko. "So you're telling me I have a throne in Rome - so who exactly sits on it?"

Wow...
A mind sharp as a razor, huh?
Quote:his is a tremendous loss for the world of distance education. In forums such as this and elsewhere, "Uncle Janko" was one of the real standard bearers for a standard in DL...
Eh?!
What did they put in this one's drink?
Standard?
A moron who took 12 years to complete a doctorate...with a South-African University?!
Sure his tongue was sharper and faster than his neurons...
I completed a degree dissertation in 2 months and got a 'first' with a UK university...granted, it might amount to just a chapter's work for a Ph.D thesis, but do your math...and I am nothing special...

Oh...
this one has hygiene problems...
And I hope your mouth gets stuffed with what Thomas Chip White 's 'boys' have to spare.
Rarely wrong?
So...degree mills are degree mills and print degrees for a fee and are not like five years of Harvard attendance...great...call the press, file a patent request...

I have passed DOZENS of DL credits, so what?
Does that entitle me to behave as a schizophrenic kapo?
Fine, I'll come there and boss you around, then we'll see how you take it.

In my opinion he's sharing passwords to Thomas Chip White 's sites with Beelzebub...

What could go wrong?
There's some real PhD level thinking. Somebody at Loyola knew what they were doing when they shit canned this guy. PhD is as PhD does, John Weaver-Gump.

Hope it was something we said.
BTW, I'm sure we all have good alibis for about 4 AM EST on the 27th, right?

So this Cicero guy has been dead for like 2000 years. Did his work change somehow in the last 12? I think it was more like a month to write the dissertation and 11.92 years to find enough people who could stand talking to Janko long enough to form a committee.

I am very sad that some of you see fit to be nasty. Whether or not you liked Janko is not the issue here. The issue is simple human decency. You condemn Janko yet act just like your accusastions about him. Shame, shame on those of you who have no decency or moral compass. A man is dead. A man whose mother and father are grief stricken and near death themselves.

Maybe numb nuts should have thought of that before he took his moonlight ride. In fact, he probably did. Some sick psychopathic way of getting back at the 'rents for some slight, real or imagined, in the past.

You are right Richard, this is indeed a terrible tragedy. Alone in the vehicle when he died...it's all just so senseless.
Why couldn't Janko have been driving the car pool van, taking Homeless Gus, Stalking George, Tailpipe Chip, Gay Al and Degreemill Klempner to the Mark Israel Memorial Bike Race? Then when he crashed and burned he could have taken a few more useless assholes along with him.
