The reaction of most normal people when they first encounter Gollin and his weird weird weird activities is "Nobody could be that weird." They figure it must be a lie or an exaggeration. That's what sociopaths count on, that expectation of normalness. It's beyond the experience of most normal people, so they just can't believe it, at least not right away.

Combine that with the typical sociopath's ingratiating behavior, and you get a nutcase flying under the radar. Two weeks before the election Big Debbie was still calling Gollin a "nice guy." Only then did she add up the score and realize that everything we've been saying about the guy for years is absolutely true.
