All nice ideas, but the bottom line is that of credit. And accepting credit depends entirely on the cartel of accredited schools, not without squabble (EG DETC vs RA).
There are great courses out there, whether free or paid ones ( EX the modern scholar/ teaching company/ITUNESU), but who gives you credit?
There may be similar courses, but the difference in syllabi means studying a new course whenever applying for credit...or why universities try to attract students or to force them to join.
