Frankly, I tend to like the history of HBCU's if nothing else.

Same here, Gabe.  I admire the self-reliance and independence these schools have shown over time (a long time).  And although they were established in what many might call a racially intolerant environment, the fact that they survived for so long is testament to the positive character of our nation, which once allowed all people to do their thing without regard to race, religion, etc.  If today’s wealthy higher education cartel had existed back then it would have stomped these small schools out of existence, crying “unaccredited.”  Anti-Christian bigots like Klempner, Contreras and Leftover would be attacking them as “substandard.”

I’ve never heard of HBCU status as being a negative in any context.  Fact is, most people don’t have a clue what it means, and those who do know share our appreciation for the history behind them.  I know an Iranian guy who got his masters degree at an HBCU before picking up his PhD at Oklahoma.  Obviously the HBCU was no impediment to his studies, and if anything might have given him a boost.
