STORRS - About nine hours after his Huskies walked off Rentschler Field with a victory over Louisville, after a press conference filled with smiles and platitudes, [regionally accredited] UConn football coach Randy Edsall's phone rang. When the phone rings at that hour, Edsall said, it's never good.

Edsall would have to go to St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford to identify a body.

Jasper Howard, a 5-foot-9, 174-pound junior cornerback for the Huskies, was dead after an on-campus stabbing early Sunday.

Howard, 20, who was soon to become a father, was stabbed near the Student Union. Police also said a second stabbing victim, a male who was with Howard, is not being identified but was treated and released from the hospital.

...Howard's death makes him the third Connecticut college student killed on or near campus in the past six months. In September, [regionally accredited] Yale University graduate student Annie Le, 24, was found strangled and stuffed into a wall in a school laboratory. Raymond Clark III, 24, who was working as a university lab technician in Le's research building, has been charged with her murder.

In May, [regionally accredited] Wesleyan University junior Johanna Justin-Jinich was working at a university bookstore and café a few blocks from campus when Stephen Morgan, whom police said stalked her, allegedly walked in and fatally shot her.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A [regionally accredited] UCLA student was badly injured when a fellow student slashed her throat in a campus lab, police said Thursday. An arrest has been made in the case.

UCLA police responded to a call of stabbing in a lab room in William G. Young Hall at about 12:20 p.m. The victim suffered multiple stab wounds, including one to the neck, and was transported to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

Lambda Phi Epsilon, based off the [regionally accredited] UCLA campus, was looking for new members. But a fight broke out, people were injured and five have been charged. Now the university is investigating.

...That's when the trouble started. After the rush event ended, fraternity members said, the crowd grew in the early hours of Sept. 22.

A fight broke out. One fraternity member was stabbed in the stomach, another student was stabbed in the arm and another hit over the head with a bottle.

Seven people, including three students, were arrested. Four were ultimately charged with attempted murder and aggravated mayhem. One student was charged with being an accessory to aggravated mayhem.

Two months after he moved from his Santa Clara home to a brand new [regionally accredited] Sacramento State University dormitory, Scott Gregory Hawkins told his parents he was adjusting well and liked the roommates in his five-person suite.

But in a shocking outburst of violence, Hawkins was bludgeoned to death inside his room Wednesday afternoon. University police say the suspect is one of those roommates, who himself was shot and wounded after officers say he lunged at them with a knife.

Hawkins, a transfer student from West Valley College, died later in the day at UC-Davis Medical Center, according to police.

Police arrested Quran Jones, 19, who witnesses reported seeing wielding a baseball bat just before university police arrived, according to Sgt. Joe Green. Police first fired pepper balls at Jones, then they fired bullets. Jones, who is in stable and fair condition at UC-Davis Medical Center, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer. Police would not disclose specifics on his injuries but said he is expected to survive.

"We have not been able to determine any sort of motive or what may have led to this," Green said.

Hawkins' father, Gerald Hawkins, of Santa Clara, told the Mercury News his son didn't have problems with any of his roommates. The younger Hawkins lived in a dormitory that opened just before the fall semester. He and Jones were the only ones present in the suite at the time of the assault, police said.

University officials closed off the suite and moved its three other occupants to other rooms, Green said. The rest of the dorm, called American River Courtyard, remains open.

Hawkins, who was pursuing a degree in history, recently talked to his parents about his adjustment to campus life.

"He was doing very well; we talked with him frequently," Gerald Hawkins said. "He hadn't been having any issues. He's a very gentle person and would never raise a hand to defend himself."

Scott Hawkins graduated from Mountain View Academy in 2004 and was "a person who really cared about other people and was a very generous, giving and caring person," his father said. His son was obsessed with history and wanted to eventually become a history teacher or professor.

Scott Hawkins had Asperger syndrome, a form of autism, "that made him very obsessive about his favorite things," his father said. He especially enjoyed studying ancient European and Middle Eastern history and was hoping he could graduate with a minor in one of those areas, his father said.

"He could go on and on about the history of Rome or the reasons that the Greek empire did this or that," Gerald Hawkins said.

The attack was reported just before 2:30 p.m. Wednesday when one of the dorm's resident assistants called police after hearing a loud disturbance coming from one of the suites.

Tsegay Arefaine, a 19-year-old resident of American River Courtyard, told the Sacramento Bee that he and his roommate left their room to investigate loud noises they heard coming from the first floor. Arefaine told the Bee that they saw a male student "breaking everything in his room" with what he thought was an aluminum bat.

"He was going nuts," Arefaine said. "He was breaking the windows, the furniture; he was even hitting himself in the head with his own bat."

The first officers to arrive heard the commotion and saw windows being broken and things being thrown outside, Green said. Officers entered the room and saw Jones holding a knife. When Jones disregarded officers' orders to drop the knife, he was struck several times with pepper ball pellets, Green said.

Then, police say, Jones raised the knife above his head and charged the officers. Jones was shot and wounded by the officers, Green said.

Police then found Hawkins, who was unconscious and appeared to have been hit on the head.

The two officers who fired guns at Jones, and who had not been identified as of Thursday, were placed on paid administrative leave while the police investigate the shooting.

It was the first killing of a student in 11 years, Green said. In 1998, a football fan shoved another fan, who hit his head on a concrete parking bumper. He died about a week later and the assailant was charged with his death.

Gerald Hawkins and his wife had met some of his son's roommates after helping him move into the campus dorm, though they did not meet the student accused of killing their son.

"Scott never indicated any problems at all," his father said.

The fraternity, which was only recently taken off of suspension after an altercation last fall with members of another fraternity, once again found itself seen in a negative light, which members say was unfairly cast.

"Everyone reads newspapers and acts like we are all gang members," said Kalvin Tsui, 23, fraternity president. "But we are students at UCLA. We're here to take midterms and finals like everyone else. Just because we are in a fraternity doesn't mean we want to start trouble."

Tsui said that fraternity members had tried to get guests to leave the party after police responded to a noise complaint but that people continued to flood in. He said he did not know any of those who started the fight.

"It was a shock," he said. "I've never seen anybody get stabbed, let alone in my own place of residence."

UCLA officials are investigating the incident to see if fraternity members violated any campus policies, said Robert Naples, associate vice chancellor and dean of students. The university has not yet taken disciplinary action, he said.

UW senior Stanley Luong has a concealed-pistol permit and carries a handgun.

He has also been robbed on four different occasions.

Luong's personal experience with robbery and crime in the U-District led him to create the Facebook group "University of Washington Campus Vigilantes," with the intent to patrol the Ave with other students who had also obtained concealed-pistol permits.

"After something like that happens to you, you get really paranoid -- and having a gun helps you move on," Luong said. "You feel safer -- like you're in control of the situation or have some control if something happens."?

The group had about 15 members join early this month before it was removed by site administrators only 48 hours after its creation due to "a violation of terms." Even though the group no longer exists, students are continuing to carry concealed weapons in the U-District, citing a need to protect themselves amid what they feel has been an increased level of crime in the U-District during the past years. The UW Police Department (UWPD) has sent notification of 10 assaults and robberies in just the past two months.

"The police will never be there," Luong said. "It will take them at least, like, three or four minutes before they can get there, and by that time, the robbers are gone. It's all about taking the law into your own hands and doing the things the police aren't doing."

John Vinson, chief of UWPD encourages students to call 911 first in the case of an emergency.

"I would not advocate the student utilizing a weapon without allowing law enforcement to respond to the situation,' Vinson said. "The response time should be relatively quickly; I would not advocate them taking the law into their own hands.'

Some students, however, disagree.

Senior Luis Garcia, a concealed-pistol-permit holder and member of the former Facebook group, said that he contacted authorities after being robbed on Greek Row in August 2008 and waited 20 minutes for an officer to respond.

"I ended up getting the run around over the phone," Garcia said. "There [seemed] to be a communication issue between the UWPD and the SPD as to whose jurisdiction the Greek system [was] in."

Garcia said that getting the knowledge to obtain a permit and learning the proper safety procedures associated with the responsibility of concealed-weapon permits would both be benefits of creating a student organization for students who carry concealed weapons.

"As of now, it's just an idea, but I believe that it has all the necessary components to become a large student organization," Garcia said. "If they go about it in a legal manner -- there's no reason that anyone should hesitate about getting this permit if they are educated about it."

When asked about the prohibition of weapons on campus, Luong said he cannot encourage students with permits to carry guns on campus, but he feels that a number of people do.

"I definitely believe that [there are] a lot of people who carry on campus," Luong said. "People are carrying because ... they want to have the responsibility. They like being in control of the situation if something happened."

Vinson said that the Washington Administrative Code prohibits the possession or use of weapons on campus.

The UW College Republicans held an event calling for concealed carry to be allowed on campus last year. The organization's president, Justin Bryant, who also holds a concealed pistol permit, said that students with the proper training who carry concealed weapons make the U-District safer.

"Whenever I'm going through high-traffic areas late at night, I carry to protect myself from all the robbers," Garcia said. "I've been jumped twice in the U-District; I think that it's good for students to be able to protect themselves."
