The German officer surrendering in the picture toward the bottom of the page was never seen again. Canadian troops routinely shot prisoners, sometimes drawing straws to see who did the job. You don't read about that in the history books.

In fact those who can 'do' are most likely busy 'doing'...only charlatans, mountebanks and psychotherapy rejects spend their time always telling everyone about things that take place in their heads only...
Anyways I read news claiming impersonators of veterans are on the raise...an article mentioned this assh-le who attended a parade in full army regalia but a plainclothes FBI officer spotted him because he was an expert and the crook wore medals and other distinctions awarded in long-gone wars (EX WWI, Spanish War etc ).
Those people should join degreeinfo or degreediscussion...but maybe they don't like Thomas Chip White 's 'artwork'...

As far as bringing your name up goes, I remember you from DI where you were constantly boasting about yourself, your accomplishments, your opinions, your knowledge of discrete mathematics, and your computer parsing program. I was very impressed.
Then an online acquaintance named Neilist told me that it was all one big lie. He compared your math prowess to someone whose literature background was based on reading Cliffs Notes. Neilist appears to be very credible while you don't stand up to scrutiny very well. Whatever public face you have developed and tried to project is a lie. You fit the profile of someone who may harbor resentment over the success of others. I don't feel bad listing your name on a roster of people who may have been jealous of uncle janko.

Reminds me of one of the few stories my dad ever told me about his time in Yorp during WWII.
Near the end of the war many German soldiers were fleeing westward so they could surrender to the Americans rather than get taken prisoner by the Russians. One fortunate fellow managed to get himself captured by my dad's squad, but they were on their way elsewhere and didn't want to be burdened dragging along a prisoner.
They searched him for weapons, then told him in English to keep moving west and he was bound to encounter someone else who would be happy to accept his surrender. But he didn't understand English and nobody spoke German. One of the guys in the outfit spoke French so they tried it again, but still
nicht verstehen.
In fact the poor guy was crying, begging them to keep him, apparently fearful he wouldn't be so lucky the second time around. Nobody could get through to the guy that he needed to keep moving on.
Finally my dad pointed a tommy gun at him and said "Toughen sie Shyster!" The phrase itself is meaningless in German, just my dad's bogus-German version of "tough shit." But when combined with the threat of imminent use of automatic weapons it was instantly understood. The German stopped sobbing and promptly headed west.
Nothing improves international communication and understanding quite so quickly as looking up the barrel of a machine gun.
It'd make no difference...of course we have no mind-boggling numbers to brag because it's not in big brother's interest to know, but some claim German prisoners died by the hundreds of thousands in post-war Germany in ALLIED camps (forget Russia). I read that Eisenhower (?) invented the definition of 'disarmed enemy forces' to dispense with the provisions of the Geneva convention, while influential Jewish statesman Morgenthau pushed a 'doctrine' calling for a drastic reduction of the German industry (and population)...
Why didn't the war end sooner?
I can understand Morgenthau who -although of no better moral caliber than his enemies- wanted revenge for his fellows, but Eisenhower?

After the war, Americans & the English vented extensively to expose soviet concentration camps in their new propaganda, while little is known to this day about ALLIED camps...some claim 1-2 millions POWs (forget civilians) died there...but of course no emotionally devastated statesman will ever jerk tears or build a monument to commemorate something that never happened, right?
Some even relay stories of American officers punished for throwing food to starving Germans against orders...
I suspect the whole 'America better than Russia' is mostly -if not entirely- a myth...I am sure Russians had one of their own.
I actually read this book as with anything, the claims should be further researched not dismissed. The reception to this book was icy, to say the least.

The fact is that the British often released prisoners within days while the Americans held prisoners for many months or longer even though they had no ability to care for them.
I know the luckiest old German. He was wounded at Stalingrad and flown out before the surrender. 90% of those surrendering at Stalingrad didn't return.
The German prisoner mentioned by Hidel was probably more afraid of running into his SS compratriots who would have shot him on the spot. As Berlin was being over-run by Russians, SS executioners were busy preventing surrenders and desertions.
No real accounting has ever been done of all the deaths in WWII because the results could not be stomached politically.
